The mentors are crucial characters in any story, they serve great purpose in guiding the heroes throughout their adventure to “greatness.” Both mentors from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Star Wars: A New Hope directed by George Lucas provide insightful knowledges and lessons to the heroes, also encouraging perseverance at challenging times. To begin, the mentors encourage perseverance and warn the heroes of the failure of giving up during the times when confronting challenges and struggles. Similar to the mentor from The Alchemist, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the mentor from Star Wars: A New Hope encourages the hero, Luke Skywalker, to practise using the Force instead of consciousness to defend himself. In order to escape their fate of death, Santiago receives the task of turning into wind within three days. Understanding the Language of the World, Santiago successfully applies his knowledge from his mentor and turns into wind. “The men were terrified at his sorcery, But there were two people who were smiling: the alchemist, because he had found his perfect disciple, and the chief, because that disciple had understood the glory of God” (Coelho 153). Santiago demonstrates his knowledge of the Language of the World by reaching through to the Soul of the World. He demonstrates that he understands the valuable lesson from the alchemist and saves his life by applying the lesson.
