Fitzgerald’s Irresponsible Narrator

Sometimes the ending of the book is made because of the mistakes of the characters. I think the ending of the a book could change if the characters would have changed their thoughts or actions. Like in the beginning of The Great Gatsby when Nick says “No- Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men.(pg 7)” Like if Tom was never aggressive of what he wanted. Or impolite to the people he liked or did not like. Last if he did not have so much prideness in what he had or what he wore. So I think Tom’s behavior in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby Led to the Tragic ending of the book.

Just like when he pulled up to George Wilson’s garage he said “let’s have some gas.(pg 129)” Like he was better then him and you could tell he was in a rush to get somewhere when he could have been nice about it and said please and you hurry up. Or how about when he went to George’s garage again just to see Myrtle and George would ask him when he would sell him the car. But he would always lie to George and said that he is having someone work on it. Could he not just say he did not have a car for him to buy and just bring his car in for him to work on so he could hang out with Myrtle. Last example is when George was doing something else and Toms says “ He’s so dumb he doesn't know he's alive.(pg 30). Like how much meaner does he have to be to someone he is cheating with his wife like if he even did have some dignity he would have told George or he would have stop but he does not have any so. That is how i Think Toms impolite behavior in The Great Gatsby Led to the tragic ending of the

Additionally, Tom Buchanan also allowed his pride to make him greedy because when the opportunity came for Tom to get rid of Jay Gatsby permanently, he jumped at it. When he realized that Wilson was upset and wanted to get revenge for his wife’s death, He told Wilson that Gatsby hit Myrtle with his car, even know he did not. His grudge against Gatsby was so substantial that he thought that when Gatsby died, “...he had it coming to him.” ( Source E) Tom’s attitude about how and why Gatsby died was very churlish, considering the fact that a man was just shot and killed for something he hadn’t even done. Scientific discoveries during the early part of the modernist period were against the mixing of races because African Americans were viewed as biologically inferior to whites. Some believed that racial inferiority was not based on science, but rather based on racial dominance in society, and it is the white race that has been in control throughout history.…
