Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is a phenomenal person who performs numerous acts and miracles through us, and assists us in every aspect of our lives if we allow him. The Holy Spirit can be characterized and described in numerous ways. The Holy Spirit is God or co-equal to God, and he is a person. The Holy Spirit can also be described as the Spirit of truth, promise, grace, holiness, glory, the eternal spirit, and a comforter. The Holy Spirit is God or coequal to God. He is part of the Trinity, of which all persons are equal and one. In Psalm 139:7-8, the psalmist asks “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” The Holy Spirit has the same characteristics of God, such as being omnipresent. In this psalm, the psalmist is describing the omnipresence of the Holy Spirit and of God. The Holy Spirit is also a person. He is a divine person. In Act 5:3, Peter referred to Ananias as “lying” to the Holy Spirit. The fact that Ananias could lie to the Holy Spirt, reveals his personal characteristic. The Holy Spirit as a person is also seen in Ephesians 4:30, where Paul instructs the Church of Ephesus not to grieve the Holy Spirit. These are just a few examples of the personal aspect of the Holy Spirit. The Holy is also referenced as “he” as oppose to “it,” as seen in John 15:26, which is also a personal trait.
