Jonas’ father is not a bad man because he doesn't know what he’s doing. Jonas’ father has been raised in a society where he is uneducated on most things, why would we not assume that he does not know what death is? Even if he does know that releasing someone is killing them, maybe he thinks that they go somewhere happy or different after death. I doubt The Council of Elders would tell the people performing the releases that they are killing someone and that they aren’t going to somewhere better after, because that could cause a rebellion. I feel like Jonas’s father is just uneducated and doing what he was told to by his government whom he trusts whole heartedly.
