Selfish Thinkers Book Report

Before I read this book I never truly thought the way that you think could actually change so much about how you work. I know that we all learn and think differently but I have been taught that nobody has a bad way of thinking. But this made me realize that when we stop and really think sometimes there can be a bad type of thinking not bad as in you don’t get a result but bad as in the type of result you get. It was hard for me to barely just get past the different types of thinkers before I started thinking back to the people I know and the teachers I had. Even though the whole thing is to tell us as an educator that we should not be the same as two of these types of thinking. I have in all my years of education have seen several people …show more content…
I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say some of them may not have started out in this type of thinking but as the years of teaching, or even those in the first year or so, started to get more and more tiring they started to switch their way of thinking. To them they are not being greedy and unkind, they just think that everyone knows the same thing that they know. These teachers to me are the ones who scoff at the new technology that they are getting in their classroom as well as the ones who do not know how to use them when the time comes for them to. They then are also the ones who never switch things up in their lesson plans, mostly out of ease for them. As a student I saw so many of my fellow students struggle under the hand of these teachers because they were to selfish with their own time, they would rather not be doing this and are well greedy with their time. Though they technically do not meet all the standards of a selfish thinker they don’t really fit anything else any better than this one. But the quote at the end of that chapter is what makes me feel like they fit into this category. Because they don’t think that they are using selfish thinking because they have long sense tricked themselves into believing they could never be one. Yet after years they have slowly fallen into

For this week’s lectures, we had three different readings. Two of which were from the book called “The Selfish Gene,” by Richards Dawkins; chapters six and ten. The other was chapter nine from “The Hadza: Hunter-Gatherers of Tanzania by Frank W. Marlowe. In chapter six from “The Selfish Gene,” they initially introduce the idea that organisms with similar genes want to help other organisms with similar genes that way those genes will have a better chance of survival. Dawkins’ argument is that this theory can be proved by observing altruism and essentially nepotism.…

Another concept that changed my life is how dangerous everything in our universe is. At any moment, an asteroid could come zooming into our planet and everything we know could disappear. In section one of your book, a chapter is ended like this, “What are the lessons to be learned from this journey of the mind? That humans are emotionally fragile, perennially gullible, hopelessly ignorant masters of an insignificantly small speck in the cosmos. Have a nice day.”…

A person’s mindset can be described as their attitude and the way that person views the world and life. In the short stories, “Seeing” by Annie Dillard and “This is Water” by David Foster Wallace, both authors explore how having different observations and ways of thinking can change someone’s mindset and attitude. In comparison, “Seeing by Annie Dillard”, shows how vision can either cloud or open the mindset of the bigger picture. However, “This is Water” by Foster Wallace, shows that focusing on oneself and neglecting others, can lead to a repetitive negative mindset of the world. Using vision and thought, you can drastically change the mindset and attitude that you see in the world.…

Peak, by Roland Smith, has many characters, and even though these characters had great personalities and skills, they had flaws as well. They all were very brave, determined, and courageous, but everyone was more or less selfish. In page 182, it states, “To climb… you have to be completely selfish”(Smith 182). I do think that everyone had shown some selfishness in the book, but some of the characters happened to stand out more than others to me. These characters were Josh Wood, Holly Angelo, and all of the other climbers.…

The University of Washington has noticed this and uses techniques like question and answer sections during and after lectures while also doing both making sure to add visual and hands on activities. For some students not wanting to do anything more than listen and reiterate the material. Now, for example art students in a math class may feel this situation stronger than psych majors in a sociology class. But even for more left brain thinkers, this can be a good way of exercising a new or deeper understanding. Teachers should have more training and should seek out to bring in the class more.…

There is a famous disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, about a prince who gets cursed and is turned into a beast who must fall in love with someone, otherwise he will remain that way forever. In the beginning, the beast is thought of as this terrifying monster who everyone is afraid of, but towards the end of the movie, he turns out to be a nice and caring character who is actually the complete opposite of scary. People just assumed he was terrifying because of the few actions that the movie presented at the start. Comparatively, in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, Chris McCandless is presented as a selfless man for feeding the homeless and donating money to OXFAM, a charity dedicated to solving the hunger crisis. However, he constantly leaves…
