Mrs. Maloney went from a joyful spouse that spent the whole day looking forward to her husband coming home, to being angry enough to kill. Maloney transforms throughout the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter”. She starts out as a simple housewife, and the events that take place in the story cause her to develop as a character. She went from being dependent on her husband to being capable to take care of herself. She became self sufficient. These changes make her an dynamic character. Mary Maloney went from a weak minded little twit to a cold-blooded killer. After she knocks him unconscious and declares him dead, she instantly becomes calm and her Instincts kicks in. She knew exactly what to do, “It was extraordinary, now, how clear her mind became all of sudden. She began thinking very fast. As a wife of a detective, she knew what the punishment would be” (2), quickly she started plotting and she came up with her alibi. Her difference in mindset from being angry and confused to calm and determined to protect herself and her baby is an example of Mrs. Maloney’s character growing and changing.
