Who Is The Cost Of Parenting In The 21st Century

Decent Essays
In the 21st century, we have used these last ten years to advance in technology, but what cost did we have to pay? These days our future generations use technology everyday letting their minds be brainwashed by what the media has to say. Instead of going outside to nature to explore we as parents and society has caused an epidemic of the natural-deficient disorder.

Technology is overcoming our lives. It is tearing us from nature, and it is allowing us freedom to do as we please. Richard Louv does an acceptable job of explaining this in a passage from "Last Child in the Woods." He creates a cocktail of ideas and rhetoric alike to form a well thought out analysis of evolution of technology, mainly one of a car in his, versus the nature that surrounds us and a simpler time at that. Richard Louv begins his passage with a detailed version of advertisement.…

The benefits of technology is obvious with the way it brings convenience, comfort, and entertainment to our lives, but the negative effects it brings are usually overlooked because of the positive effects it gives us. Technology has affected us mentally, socially, and physically and not always in a good way. If we don't do something to help slow down these effects, our future may turn out like the future of the humans in…

I have a deep love for the Wilderness and believe that we need to continue to conserve it. “...wilderness takes us to something far older and deeper, returns all of us, regardless of race or nationality to one and the same place…”(Claggett 17). It took me a while to distance myself from the bubble that is the Internet to realise the importance of nature but I have. The Internet can consume the lives of people and taking time to distinguish it from necessity and importance can help a great deal in not becoming immersed in…

Over the last few epochs of time, one major element has innovated and expanded to the point where human beings need the assistance of this transcontinental "machine" for even the easiest tasks. This massive element is known as technology, and it has situated itself as an everyday utensil in just a couple of years. One may not even realize how much time we spend each day on technology, whether it is for educational purposes or entertainment reasons. With this stated, a majority of people may agree on the fact that technology has deteriorated the human brain. On the contrary, the rest of the human beings (mainly millennials) oppose and agree that massive technology has been leading to positives regarding any given scenario in a society.…

After reading both Kelle Lasn’s and Richard Louv’s pieces on how humans have become distant from nature, I became very upset with myself. When I was younger I loved spending time outside. Whether I was playing sports with the neighborhood kids, helping my grandfather with his garden or talking walks in the park near my house, I realized that I do not spend nearly as much time outside as I used to. With technology constantly being invented and reinvented, video games, television shows and phones are just a few of the technological things that steal most of the joy that nature used to bring to people. As a kid, I begged to spend more time outside even though it was dinner time or the sun had set hours before.…

In this day and age, it is all too easy to view nature through the megapixels of a photo on an iPhone, or have over one hundred million images of any animal or plant appear in less than a second via Google Images. It is an astonishing accomplishment in technology, and its attributes to human welfare cannot be dismissed, but it does have its faults. Subsequently, these faults reflect concepts that philosophers have conferred for centuries. Many philosophers believe that technology, along with other entities and beliefs in Western culture, is pulling Americans away from having a strong connection with nature. One of the more contemporary philosophers, David Abram, expresses the importance of having a sense of unity with the natural world in his…

Michael Specter’s TED Talk “The Danger of Science Denial,” is an argument on why the scientific method is great and why it is an important part of the society. According to Specter, science has been the transformative force, which has remarkably improved the society in the last thousands of years. He argues that this happens to be the best time in society, in terms of mobility, wealth, health, and opportunities. However, science has been at the center of increased suffering for billions of societies across the world, with the rise of hunger. He argues that science has led to the degradation of land, which has then led to suffering for some parts of the society.…

Some people in today’s society are eager to stop global warming because they are aware of the problems that global warming is causing to people and the Earth. As Louv discusses in “A Life of the Senses”, how children especially in America are very addicted to modern inventions and do not care about the beautiful environment around them. For example, whenever there is a new product in the market, they cannot wait to go and get it but nature is providing everyone with all new resources each and every day which they have no idea about. Not being connected with nature, children of today’s society are slowly losing their ability to learn, work and become an active person and day by day it is making their life worse. On the other hand, in the article, “The End of Nature”, McKibben explains how American people are being affected by the global warming. It is preventing the Americans to not experience the nature the way people experienced before.…

When you visualize kids today, what do you picture? Do you see them frolicking outside with sunshine hitting their skin and imagination pumping through their veins? Or do you see them slouching on a sofa, glued to a bright screen, and with a glaze over their eyes? We often criticize those children on tablets and smartphones for not being outside much, but we are just as guilty of going outdoors less ourselves. In Florence Williams’ The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, she takes a look at the effects nature has upon us.…

We are living in a world that is constantly growing due to the ever changing world of technology. It’s becoming a social norm to see young children walking around with cell phones, tablets, etc. Technology has overtaken our culture and children are learning at a very early age how to use technology for different forms of entertainment. The constant exposure to this stimuli is causing major physical health issues (obesity and senses), psychological health issues (narcissism and cognitive losses), and social health issues ( loss of social skills and depression).…

Our world continuously runs on technology every minute of the day. Everyday, there are new technological advances and discoveries being made through science and research. Although, it has many positive effects on people and the world itself, it has many negative effects on children. Today, children as young as the age of 1, grow up watching cartoons and television shows on computers and phones. Technology can also have positive effects on children, but since fundamentals start at a young age, children get so used to technology, that they forget that it comes along with negative effects as well.…

I do agree with the basic concept of the book, that there is true a nature deficit in the past couple generations including the newest generation. I believe just because of our technological advances it’s almost easier to ignore the outside world. It’s easier to say hey, go watch t.v. you won’t by physically harmed from that. Except they are being harmed they have no experience with nature and its no coincidence that we are raising the most obese children to date and it has a lot to do with the amount of emphasis we put on essentially everything else but going outside.…
