The conch symbolizes many things, but one of the major symbols is power. In the book, Ralph first summons all the boys on the island by blowing into the conch. When the conch is blown all of the boys ban together on the beach, also whoever is holding the shell has the right to speak. “‘That’s what this thing is called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking…. And won’t be interrupted. Except by me’”(33). Through the shell everyone could have a chance to speak up and say what they are thinking. This is a way to communicate and a good way for Ralph to have a sense of authority. The conch has a certain effect on the boys in the beginning where they all want rules and appreciate the person holding the conch until Jack starts ignoring Piggy and all the boys start following Jack and in the end the conch is broken and there is no communication between any of the kids so they are all acting like
