In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Nick bottom, one of the “Rude Mechanicals”, is a conceited actor. He frequently displays his overconfidence/conceitedness throughout act one, scene two of the play. For instance, he boasts he is fit enough to play all the roles in the play, as though he is the best actor, when he proclaims, “Let me play the lion too, I will roar that I will do/any man’s heart good to hear me; I will roar, that I/ will make the Duke say, “Let him roar again, let him/roar again.”” (1.2.65-68) This exhibits Bottom’s overconfidence in himself and his acting abilities, as he thinks he is more talented than the other actors that he can play all the role in the play.
