He tells her that she has been living in a “black and white room” for most of her created life, meaning that she has been living in a world that is considered bland and lifeless. In various ways, this is Caleb’s own reflection of himself. He has unimaginable knowledge, but lacks the overall ability to do more. He cannot live without questioning everything first, signifying that he often does not take chances and second guesses himself. Although Ava also has human like characteristics, it does not automatically make her a human. Even though it was a negative act, Ava’s true desire to learn more on how to be a human pushes her to manipulate and take action without having to think about it. Without them, humans would not be able to function correctly in that there would be no beauty, no art, and no passion. The emotional connections we make connect us to the world around us, whether it be other humans or even the environment its self. Connections we make assist us in making beautiful creations. For example, when explaining the abstract painting to Caleb, Nathan explains that if the artist would have let his thoughts and logic guide his actions, there would be no painting to look at. It was the emotion of the artist that was able to guide his hand, without him having to think about it or establish a purpose for what occurs. In the end we are all similar to Caleb and Ava in that we are able to do all the physical things a human can do. However, we all need to let our emotional connections take control in order to feel a little more
