We have all heard and said “I am an expert and I am a professional” and “No one is more professional than I”, but how do these words translate into the Army and into action? Being a professional is the most important aspect of todays Army. The Army has to uphold the Constitution and the service and protection of the American people. This task is not taken lightly and most be elaborated on through knowledge of the word and how it applies to the Army, the culture of a professional Army, and the leaders role in a profession of arms. Firstly, An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms (2010) states that, professions produce uniquely expert work and thrive on effectiveness, rather than efficiency. These ideas are not mutually exclusive but are some factors to look at for what is the Army professional culture. The Army culture has a functional utility that can be broken down into three distinctive parts, the professional identity, community and hierarchy. (An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms, 2010). Professional Identity is the work ethic and service that a Soldier has for their MOS. Community is the relationship that binds a unit together through hardships and professional friendship. This I believe is the corner stone of the Army profession, the idea of a military family that takes care of one another and has each other’s back through thick and thin. Then there is hierarchy which is the chain of command, good order and discipline through leaders. What does this all mean for Army …show more content…
It must take into account the mission and the effects on Soldiers, be it the wellbeing and their overall satisfaction. Now, what role do leaders play in balancing the mission with Soldiers overall state of being? Leaders have the unalienable job of determining almost all aspects of Soldier life, from when we eat to when we go home for the day and everything between. It is very important that leaders understand this. By understanding this the leader can either make or break careers for Soldiers and as a professional we want to give the best so we receive the best. This I believe is the hardest job of a leader, there is a mission that must be accomplished but without Soldiers the mission would never be complete.
