He invites Candy and her friend over, and of course they bring alcohol. McMurphy sneaks the girls and booze in with the help of the orderly that was working that night, Turkle, who is only interested in Candy’s friend. While Turkle is in a different room with the woman McMurphy wakes the other patients and they have a party. By the end of the night McMurphy decides to help Billy out by sending him and Candy into a room together. McMurphy thinks that if Billy loses his virginity he will be much more confident. McMurphy could have escaped the facility through an open window, but he decided to help Billy out, and then he falls asleep. The next morning Nurse Ratched comes to work and sees the aftermath of the party. She gathers all of the patients in front of her and realizes that Billy is missing. They search every room and find him in one of the rooms with Candy. Billy comes running out and the audience can see from the smile on his face that he has more confidence. The audience can also see that Billy has more confidence because when he first runs out after Nurse Ratched he is not stuttering. He says, “Um I can explain everything,” without a stutter. Even this simple sentence would have been difficult for Billy to say before. Nurse Ratched asks, “Aren’t you ashamed?” and Billy replies, again without a stutter and with a smile on his face, “No I’m not”. Unfortunately, Nurse Ratched knows exactly what

Strength and Vulnerability in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Throughout his famous novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey shows that power and vulnerability are largely subjective, and people often only have power because others think that they do. Chief Bromden’s unreliable narration depicts all kinds of power as physical size despite a character’s real size or physical ability. Nurse Ratched’s power over the rest of the characters, and McMurphy’s ability to resist it, shows that power is a matter of people’s perception as much as anything else. Chief Bromden is the narrator and main character of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.…

Ken Kesey uses the characterization of Nurse Ratched and her manipulative power, to bring Billy back to his vulnerable self, “You know Billy, what worries me is how your mother is going to take this. “ This represents Nurse Ratched manipulation towards Billy about his mother, and Billy’s fear of his mother. Insistently, Harding attempts to get McMurphy to escape like they had planned the night before through the unlocked window, knowing he will get the worst punishment out of all the patients thus from the previous night. However, McMurphy says that “[he] couldn’t get his head through that window, let alone [his] whole body,” (p. 312) This detail suggests that McMurphy could have left the institute if he aspired to escape, however after getting caught he does not want to leave the other patients alone with the consequences while he avoided them. It is demonstrated that McMurphy has created such a close bond to the patients when Bromden says even if he had escaped, McMurphy, “Would have had to come back” (p.310) This implies that even though McMurphy would have been gone, he would return to the hospital to get back at the nurse for punishing the patients for their night of rowdiness.…

In the film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” based on Ken Kesey’s book many characters are, or believe they are, suffering from a mental illness. From the movie, I would have trouble diagnosing the character Chief Bromden with a mental illness because he is not the focus of the movie; however, from reading the book I can easily say he suffers from schizophrenia and/or paranoid personality disorder (PPD). This is because in the book he is the narrator so the reader knows that he has real symptoms of these two disorders and meets the criteria for abnormality. To be considered “abnormal,” one must reflect at least one of the four D’s: dysfunctional, distress, dangerous, and deviant. In the book, it is obvious that the chief falls under the two…

1.There are multiple mental illnesses portrayed in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as the setting for the story is a mental institution. The narrator is a large Native American who feigns deaf and dumbness. This character is an excellent study in the evolution of a mentally ill individual along the path of finding a semblance of normalcy, although the phenomenon is the result of interactions with a decidedly psychopathic or sociopathic man, McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson. Nicholson connives to be placed in a mental institution to avoid jail and throughout his antics we are offered an internal view of a form of mental illness more difficult to diagnose - psycho &/or sociopathy. The terms have been used interchangeably and even experts disagree…

However despite this clear act of manipulation, many of the patients think that they are better off with the log book. This enrages McMurphy because a part of him feels that it is his responsibility to expose what she is doing to them. For example the quote "So I’m saying five bucks to each of you that wants it if I can’t put a betsy bug up that nurse’s butt within a week.” represents the creation of McMurphy 's divided self. By choosing to take the bet McMurphy has given himself the responsibility to help the patients with the risk of hurting himself. He is now forced to split his personality into two to please himself and the…
