Shirley Jackson´s realistic fiction story ¨ Charles ¨ takes place in Laurie's home. Laurie is a boy who goes to kindergarten for the first time. He meets a boy named Charles who is a quite a mischievous kid and gets himself into trouble. He enjoys disrespecting his teachers, acting aggressively towards his classmates, and being mean towards others. Ultimately, it becomes clear to everyone but Laurie’s mother that Charles is imaginary. The author uses description and a plot twist to present the fact that not telling the truth to others impacts everyone.
Lying to others is an immense problem that affects everyone in the story. As Laurie comes home to his parents day by day, he informs them about Charles, causing his parents to become very curious wondering why Charles is this way. Since the beginning of Laurie's school year Charles´ behavior and actions at school and the punishments he receives from his teacher make them curious about Charles’ parents. They wonder what is going on in their home and they begin to judge them. They question them as parents because they believe their son’s lies. This is significant because his mother is embarrassed at the end of the story. For example, “You know what Charles did? He demanded, following me through the door. ¨Charles yelled so in school they sent a boy in from the first grade to tell the teacher she had to make Charles keep quiet, and so Charles had to stay after school. (74) This shows that as Laurie lies to his mother she doesn't get the chance to ask Laurie how his day was giving Laurie the chance to say anything and make his mother believe him. Jackson uses description to give the reader a better idea and understanding of the
