Who Is Sherlock Holmes The Adventure Of The Speckled Band

I think that The Adventure of the Speckled Band is among one of the most popular Sherlock Holmes stories because it's a different sort of mystery. In the story, it talks about gypsies living on the land that Dr. Roylott owns as well as the two exotic animals that he owns. Also, Dr. Roylott is the one trying to murder his two stepdaughters (successfully killing one) for their money of which they would receive if married off. His home is modified so that his pet snake could enter the daughter's bedroom and eventually kill her. I think that there may be some racism in this story because the daughter's weren't fond of the gypsies living on their stepfathers land. Miss Hunter made comments about them and didn't like her stepfather going off weeks to months at a time with them. …show more content…
The element of fear comes from Miss Hunter because she gets herself into the situation where she is being used as a lookalike for Mr. RuCastle's daughter. The story is suspenseful because we aren't quite sure why Miss Hunter is being asked to bend to every whim of Mr. and Mrs. RuCastle. Then, once Sherlock and Watson figure out what is happening in the house, Mr. RuCastle finds them as well as Miss Hunter in the room where he kept Alice. However, he wasn't the one to move Alice, but it was her fiancé who saved her and took off with her. Once Mr. RuCastle finds Sherlock, Watson, and Miss Hunter, we are left with suspense because he leaves to go release the dog and the reader isn't sure how everything was going to play

Although the causation of fear changed from the 1600s to 1850, the conceptual understanding of fear itself had not changed. This can be observed in the texts The Scarlet Letter, A narrative of Frederick Douglass, and Civil Disobedience which take place or were published in the mid 1600s, mid 1700s, and the mid 1800s. All the literary works mentioned show or express some type of fear that influences the actions of society.
