Who Is Sammy A Hero

Improved Essays
Is a hero defined by his actions, or by the reasons behind those actions? I believe in the latter, and in John Updike’s story, “A+P,” the character Sammy is a perfect example of this. He does something that may seem heroic to some people, but because Updike gives us this story in through the perspective of Sammy we can see his true thoughts behind the decisions he makes. I believe that Sammy is not a hero because the one action that might could have been perceived in the story as “heroic” was just a selfish act, he is very judgmental towards other people in the story, and he acts before he thinks, which is not a trait a hero would have.

Sammy is not a heroic character because the one time he might have done something "heroic," he only did it for himself. In the story, the narrator said "so I say 'I quit' to Lengel quick enough for [the girls] to hear, hoping they'll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero," evidencing that he only wanted his actions to seem heroic so that he could hang out with the girls, and that he did not really care about the girl's feelings as much as he tried to portray that he did. The narrator was also very judgmental towards the girls, which is not a very heroic trait.

The narrator called one of the girls in a bikini "chunky," showing how he used derogatory terms to judge the girl. He also called all the people in the store "sheep," another derogatory term showing he thinks the customers are brainless and just walk around getting their things without putting much thought into it. Sammy is also quick to act on his passions, which is not a heroic

Sammy is extremely judgmental towards his customers. He often calls the shoppers "sheep pushing their carts down the aisle. " Sammy is insulting and judging these customers by referring to them as animals and hinting that they are stupid and causing chaos just like sheep usually do. He also called one of his customers a "witch about fifty. " Saying that she is an evil old woman, when, in fact, he does not even know this woman or what kind of person she is.…

For instance, as the girls leave in result of Lengel, Sammy reacts in this way, “The girls, and who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say ‘I quit’ to Lengel quick enough to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero” (4) This shows that Sammy wants to impress the three girls, hoping to win them over with his loyalty to them and not to his own manager. This action demonstrates that Sammy doesn’t value the morally ethical things in life. He values acts of rebellion and people that break rules, especially if it is an almost naked girl in his point of view. He also values a sense of superiority and difference between him and the other workers/Lengel.…

Sammy was fuming with anger from the embarrassment Mr. Lengel caused the young females, that it actually led him to quit as a cashier at A&P supermarket. Sammy felt that he if he quit it would prove to the young females that he’s their hero and it would probably be stress free for him having to deal with a foolish manager. By the time Sammy said “I quit” to his miserable manager Mr. Lengel, the girls were already out the door and they didn’t even recognize what he did for them. Probably just shows how much they really cared. As you can see, Updike put an intense scene in his story to have a stronger…

In A&P, written by John Updike, the main character Sammy works at an A&P grocery store in a small town. Based upon his outlook, Sammy is presented in the story as a person uninterested in his life and seeking a change. After three girls are belittled for wearing bathing suits in the store, Sammy is displayed as tired of his closed-minded boss and the customers. As a result, he decides to quit his job on a whim, demonstrating Sammy’s immaturity and carelessness. Although it appears that Sammy has only a single motivation behind this bold decision—to get the girls’ attention—when closely analyzed, Sammy’s description of the customers and his attitude towards the store reveals to the reader that he has been fed up with this lifestyle long before…

Sammy, a 19-year-old boy, serves as a protagonist character in the A&P short Story. He initially works as a cashier in a small-town supermarket. The A&P story happens in a small community that carries a profound conservative opinion (Wheeler, 2011). At the start of the story, three young ladies walk into the store putting on bathing suits. The way how the girls go about dressing themselves makes people especially Sammy look upon them strangely, which reveals the rift within the young and the old generations.…

I believe that a hero is made, not born. Nobody is born with characteristics of a hero, such as: fortitude, benevolence, vigor, or empathy. These characteristics blossom inside a person over time and life experiences. The quote, “Heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion.” , by Calvin Coolidge tells us that heroism is something that is shown when a specific person is thrown into a situation.…
