Early on, during his time on the island, Roger would show sadistic tendencies. These tendencies first arrived during chapter four when “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law.” (Pg. 62). At the time of this quote, Roger is only refraining from hitting Henry because he still feels like he will be in trouble. As soon as he realized there is no law his true demons are unleashed. In the sequel, Roger will continue the bloodlust that was awoken in the first novel. His sadistic tendencies will grow and grow in the ten years following being rescued. At this point, Roger will have begun mercilessly killing other people as he becomes happy and enjoys others pain. In his reign as a serial killer, Roger will amass a huge body count. However, he will be caught and will be sentenced to spend time in an insane asylum as he pleads insanity and avoids a multiple life sentencing.
