Who Is Responsible For Mrs Mallard's Death

Improved Essays
The cause for Mrs. Mallard's death was she was shock to see that her husband was still alive, and she was not as free as she thought she was. From reading this story I feel as though she was trapped in a situation that she would not be able to get out of unless he was dead. Mr Mallard may have been the reason for Mrs Mallard's heart problem. My reasons for this was back in that time women did not have a say so in anything. It was basically as women had no identity.
More than likely she was probably always in stressful situations that caused heart failure. Mrs. Mallard never actually got to live her own life because she was always told what to do or what not to do. In paragraph 10 it states Mrs. Mallard saying the words ¨free, free, free!¨

Mallard was in a severe depression. In the beginning of the story it is described how they took very good care of her because of her heart disease, how her sister told her in a gentle way that her husband died, and how descriptive the setting is when she is in her room by herself. “The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the streets below a peddler was crying his ware” (Chopin, par. 5). This description shows how she was perceiving the world in shades of gray after she received the news.…

Chopin’s portrayal dissects human emotion, and more specifically Mrs. Mallard’s initial struggle with her husband’s death, and emotion that follows afterwards. Delving into the complexity of human psyche, Chopin constructs a world out of subtle imagery and raw emotion. By examining the story’s imagery and Mrs. Mallard’s personal reaction to the news of her husband’s death, we argue that Chopin uses an indirect characterisation of Mrs. Mallard to explain her feelings towards her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard’s range of feelings after her husband’s death exemplifies the complexity and depth of human emotion. Initially succumbed to shock, a flurry of emotion is expected, especially when it relates to a death.…

She’s now free from house duties and waiting hand and foot for her, she can now do what ever makes her happy. After Mrs. Mallard found out the news about her husband 's passing, we see her briefly as a grieving widow, crying in her sister’s arms, that is until paragraph four. In paragraph four, we see her as she flees to her room and then sits down in a “comfortable, roomy chair”. Its seems inappropriate for a wife who just lost her husband to be sitting comfortably in a roomy chair. She should be sitting on the floor or laying on her bed crying her heart out. We expected a wife who would not stop crying uncontrollably after learning that her life partner was gone, but that is not the case here with Mrs. Mallard.…

Through the quotation it is evident that Mrs. Mallard believes that one should cherish a life in solitude as it brings newfound freedom and opportunities. As well, the beginning and the end of the story mention that Mrs. Mallard has heart trouble, which I feel is because she feels oppressed and restricted due to her marriage as we get an insight of her private thoughts; “There would be no one to live for her during those coming years: she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will…

My personal interpretation is that Mrs. Mallard has heart problems and the shock from hearing about the death of her husband was too much for her. The author mentions that she felt free after she heard the news about Mr. Mallard. I believe that Mrs. Mallard was not fully aware her husband was gone and never coming back. If she would have realized this she would have acted differntly once she realized that she would be doing everything on her own for the rest of her life. When Mrs. Mallard saw that her husband was still alive at the end of the story, she did not die from joy, instead she died of shock.…

Many people have their own definition of what the term freedom means. If you type in the word freedom into google the definition that will come up is “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” If you were to ask me my own definition of freedom I would sum it up and say when you’re not tied down to anybody or anything and you get to do whatever you want whenever you want without any repercussions. An example would be if you are in a marriage, of course you have to consider the other person’s thoughts and feelings. But say you want to go out with your girlfriends and have a good night out.…

Mrs. Mallard’s character makes a positive transformation with the realization that she could live her life without judgment for being a childless widow. However, she figuratively witnesses the death of her dreams when her husband walked through the front door. She had just begun to believe herself to be a free individual as illustrated by the narrator who states, “When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: “free, free, free!” “(180).…
