In the short story “Sucker”, by Carson McCullers, the main protagonist,
Pete, is portrayed as being an insensitive juvenile . Throughout the entirety of the story, he is shown having no regard for the feelings of his younger cousin, Richard. The first example of this character trait being shown is in this quote. “Why do you always hang around me. Don’t you know when you’re not wanted”(pg.22). Through the words that were said by pete, it is clear to the reader that Pete doesn't care for Richards company. Pete had no reason to snap at Richard, who was simply asking Pete why they aren’t as close as they used to be. “ Sometimes Sucker would wake up and ask why I couldn’t get settled and I’d tell him to hush his mouth”(pg.19). Why would show such disrespect towards Richard, where all he is doing is showing concern for him. Earlier Pete explained he couldn’t sleep some nights because he’d be thinking about Maybelle. It doesn’t make sense for Pete to get mad at Richard, when he can’t sleep because of Maybelle, not Richard . Not only that, but he never even tells Richard the reason why he can't sleep. This makes it look like Pete doesn't even think Richard’s reassurance would be good; or that he thinks Richard’s opinion would be useless to him. The final example of Sucker displaying his character trait of being insensitive is in this quote. “Once a couple of years ago I told him (Sucker) that if he’d jump off our garage with an umbrella it would act as a parachute and he wouldn’t fall hard. He did it and busted his knee”(pg.18). At first glance, this prank pulled off by Pete seems relatively harmless. But really, all Pete is doing is taking advantage of Richard’s
