Make some hot chocolate, turn on the Christmas lights and curl up with your young child to enjoy some wonderful winter and Christmas books this holiday season. Reading Olive the Other Reindeer, by Vivian Walsh and J. Otto Seibold, could become a Christmas tradition for parents with young children. Olive is a dog who suddenly thinks she might really be a reindeer after misunderstanding the lyrics of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." She travels to the North Pole to help Santa and even "flies" with the other reindeer for some Christmas Eve adventures. The story's premise may need to be explained to some, but older toddlers through elementary children will enjoy the story and beautiful illustrations of Olive's antics. Unlike most children, this little rabbit does want the snow to stop because his father's arrival has been delayed because of the weather. Trees have feelings, too, and in A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree by Colleen Monroe, children of all ages will relate to an old tree's sadness at being overlooked every Christmas. However, this tree is even more special than the typical Christmas tree because, as the forest animals tell him, he is enjoyed throughout the year. The rhyming story also highlights friendship and compassion, which children can practice every day and not just to get on Santa's good list. Grumpy Badger, the main character in Grumpy Badger's Christmas by Paul Bright, is settling in for the winter but the other animals keep pestering him. His humbug attitude towards Christmas and the continuous interruptions of his sleep make him a very grumpy guy but at heart, he is a good friend and his attitude is transformed. Although the publisher recommends this book for kindergarten and older, most preschoolers will like this story. Children and parents may already be familiar with Bear in Bear Stays Up for Christmas if they've read "Bear Snores On."
