When his father first heard that Oedipus was going to kill him and marry his mother. So Laius told one of his servants to percies his ankles so he couldn’t walk and that's how he got his name Oedipus. His mother (Jocasta) handed the baby to a shepherd and was told to take the baby up to the mountains for him to die, but he couldn’t do it so he gave it to a different shepherd that took him to the court of King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth (Greek Mythology).
The king and Queen adopted the poor baby. Later when he was older, the Oracle told him that they weren't his real parents and also that he was supposed to kill his father and marry his mother. Jung's theory also says that often the hero becomes the sacrificial scapegoat for his people or country. The sacrificial scapegoat is defined as a hero who must die for the well being of his country, people, or for the sins of his people in order to save the land (Guerin 163). In addition Jung says that the death of the hero as a sacrificial scapegoat can often be attributed to the hero's hubris, or excessive pride in themselves and their accomplishments (Guerin 168). Oedipus is an archetypal hero because he follows the quest, and is later the sacrificial scapegoat. His quest is when he leaves his parents, who have raised him, Dorian Merope and Polybus, out of fear of the oracle.…

It’s crazy to think that two pieces of literature can be so similar, yet so far apart in the time from when they were written. Sophocles play Oedipus the King, written in 496 BC is similar to J.D. Salinger’s short story “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” published in 1948 in many ways. Both the play and the short story have many coinciding ideas such as the struggle of finding out who you really are in the world. Many people struggle with this problem, like the main characters, Seymour Glass in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” by J.D. Salinger and Oedipus in Oedipus the King by Sophocles.…

Overt the weekend, J.J. Abrams justified what has to be one of the most painful deaths in movie—maybe storytelling—history by saying that if they didn’t do it, The Force Awakens wouldn’t have had “any guts.” And die-hard fans know that Harrison Ford has wanted Han Solo to die at least since Return of the Jedi; if anyone gets to have a big say, if not the say, in whether or not Han Solo lives, it gets to be Harrison Ford. But still. Let me put it this way: I can’t let my mother see this movie.…

Aware that a terrible curse has fallen upon the city of Thebes, King Oedipus sends Creon, his brother-in-law to seek advice from the god Apollo. Creon returns with the news that the curse can only be lifted if the murderer of former king Laius is identified and either banished or killed. Without much thought, Oedipus makes it his responsibility to discover who committed the murder many years ago and banish them from Thebes forever. It is then suggested to Oedipus that he must speak with the blind prophet Teiresias who often “sees” what Apollo “sees”.…

I chose the character Tiresias because he is the person who knows what is going on with the world around him. Tiresias is a old wise prophet that sees what the gods see. He is a very wise, humble, and all knowing prophet. In “Oedipus the King”, Tiresias tells Oedipus that he is the murderer he hunts, and Oedipus does not believe him. The moment I captured in the mask is the part where Tiresias is telling Oedipus that he is the murder of the last king and his father and he would marry his own mother.…

Man will always have an innate desire to have what isn’t his. Discontent is a hopeless side effect to human nature, and unfortunately all men deal with it hundreds of instances within a lifetime. What people don’t realize, though, is they are given what they have for a reason. The creator of the universe purposely places things, people, and circumstances in everyone’s life when it is appropriate. When men chase after their own desires, it often results in some sort of consequence.…

    Truth In Oedipus Rex

In the story of Oedipus, there are several examples that show man’s relationship with the truth. The oracle predicts the truth about the future of Laius, Jocasta, and Oedipus. Killing his father and marrying his mother are both examples of what the oracle predicted about them. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shows that, in the case of finding truth, if a man starts in search for the truth, he must find the whole truth, but if a man never starts in search for the truth, he can stay ignorant of the truth. The story of Oedipus shows that the better of the two is staying ignorant of the truth.…
