Who Is Monsanto Gaining Control The Food Business Industry?

Decent Essays
Over the years Monsanto has gain control of the food business industry by manipulating farmers. Monsanto sells Roundup Ready seeds and farmers can actually purchase these seeds but to do so farmers must sign a contact with Mosanto stating that farmers cannot save seeds to produce after each year for re-planting, or sell the seeds to other farmers. If farmers do not follow the rules of the contract then they will have a breach of contact and Monsanto will file a lawsuit againt any farmer that violates the contract and they will take anything away from the farmer such as its property. Every farmer does not buy genetically modified seeds from Monsanto but there are many cases where the G.M. seeds do land in another farmer's property because of

Summary of Monsanto’s Harvest of fear by Barlett and Steele The summer day in 2002 at the town square of Eagleville, Missouri, a tiny farm community 100 miles north of Kansas City. Gary Rinehart was behind the counter of the Square Deal, his "old-time country store," as he states. When a stranger walked in and issued his threat. As Rinehart would recall, the man began to verbally attack him, saying he had proof that Rinehart had planted Monsanto's genetically modified (G.M.) soybeans in violation of the company's patent.…

Monsanto is a powerful company with a history of making what many would find questionable or unethical business decisions in the quest for profits. “Many stakeholders are concerned about the moral and safety implications of genetically modified food” (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). If I were Monsanto’s CEO, to balance the conflicting needs of the variety of stakeholder groups that the company must successfully engage, I would first place labels on the products. Although the FDA determined Americans do not need to know when they consume genetically modified products the company would state the fact on labeling like it does in other countries. Also, I would continue to donate to programs that focus on improving communities in developing countries.…

If a transgenic seed shows up in a farmer’s property, then Monsanto detectives should investigate how the seed possibly landed there. In that case, draw conclusions and consequences to the one responsible for crossbreeding an unnatural crop with an organic crop which as we can imagine isn’t probably healthy for the environment. Under those circumstances, it could lead to mutations or be considered as an invasive plant species or even worse an in pesticide that will wipe out certain pollinators, that are essential to our survival. In that case, where a farmer named Percy Schmeiser was successfully sued by Monsanto because he had unauthorized Roundup canola seeds in his farm. Percy delineated, that the seeds possibly were brought in by the wind…

In the article “Monsanto’s Harvest of Fear”, by Donald Barlett and James Steele; there are claims made that state that Monsanto is the ruler of all of the United States food production. Monsanto produces genetically enhanced seeds that resist many weed killers such as their own product, Roundup. By doing this Monsanto has put a patent on these seeds, this means that farmers have to buy Monsanto’s product. But, when farmers buy the seeds they have to sign a contract agreeing to not reuse them, so that they are required to buy more. Monsanto is so strict on this policy that they have hired Gestapo like subjects called “seed police” to go check farmer’s fields.…

The companies that sell GMO seeds claim that certain genetically modified crops are better for the environment because they reduce the amount of pesticides and herbicides used in farming, but this has not been shown to be the case. One recent study by researchers at Washington State University estimated that between 1996 and 2011, pesticide and herbicide use increased by more than 400 million pounds as a result of GMO cultivation. This and other evidence suggests that GMO crops are rapidly escalating with weeds and…

Most Genetically modifed crops have been engineered to be herbicide tolerant. Monsanto, as an example, will sell Roundup Ready crops designed to survive the use of their Roundup herbicide. Statistics From 1996 to 2008 say that American farmers had to spray an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs. The overuse of Roundup may result in case of super weeds that are stronger than normal and are resistant to any herbicide. This is now causing farmers to have to use even more harmfully toxic herbicides every year just in order to get any crops.…

In the article by Monsanto, they make a lot of claims of reasons as to why they enforce contracts in such an extreme way. The article by Barlett and Steele that the Monsanto Corporation is seen in a negative light, but in the contrary of though and reason Monsanto says otherwise has also showed it. Monsanto’s claim is it should keep enforcing the contract of its patented seeds. Their first reason for backing this claim is that there has been a small percentage of farmers do not honor the contract agreement on seeds and by their actions they are sued. Monsanto’s backing for this is that since 1997 there have been 144 lawsuits filed, and from then on, there have been about 11 lawsuits per year that in the grand number of their clientele of about 4.6 million (source of total clientele since 1997 per year found on Monsanto’s website) or about 250,000 per year since 1997.…

Monsanto’s cause has been violent and in the legal system more than once. Monsanto has sued more than four-hundred and ten farmers for using their seeds in cross parenting and general field growth without purchasing or proper licensing (Johnson, 4). On the other hand, in the Percy Schmeister vs. Monsanto Canada Inc., Monsanto tried to sue Percy for misuse of their crops, but they didn’t expect he would counter sue Monsanto for cross-contaminating his fields. Most farmers that have been sued didn’t have proof to counter against Monsanto, but Percy’s case sparked a reaction Monsanto didn’t expect. According to Amy Glasscock “Schmeiser discovered his plants were contaminated when he sprayed a three-acre test patch of his farm located near the road with Roundup”…
