Some examples of this would be the characters Jacob, Emma, and Miss Peregrine. The protagonist in the book is Jacob Portman. Jacob is a 15 year old boy who works at his mother’s store, helps out his grandfather, and goes to school like a typical person. Seems ordinary, right? Well, when his grandfather dies mysteriously, he goes on a quest to find out what happened. On his journey, he discovers things he never knew like how he and his grandfather actually have the power to see strange creatures called hollows. He is important because this power is very rare and almost no others can do this. This gives him an advantage and explains how he contributes to making the novel fantasy. Another character in the book is Emma. Emma is a very peculiar, and cautious character. When we are first introduced to her, she thinks Jacob is one of the menacing creatures, a hollow, who can kill peculiar children like herself. She is considered to be odd because of her power to generate fire with her bare hands. People who have these uncanny abilities are kept hidden from casual people. She is one of the several children to stay with Miss Peregrine, the owner of the haven, who keeps the strange children. In the book, the setting mostly takes place in a house on an island christened Cairnholm. The island offers a very strange and isolated panorama. It contains a very undersized amount of people in it and has unusual but very constant foggy weather. Although the perspective isn’t very pleasing, Cairnholm has a lot of activity going on. The house also appears very unappealing and distasteful to common people. Only peculiars, people who have strange powers, can enter the loop and see the magnificent house as it truly is. The loop is a very important factor to the house. It keeps the children safe, and if the children were to step out of the loop they would age in a matter of hours outside and die.
