If Jem was on the jury with eleven other boys like him, Tom would be free and the vote would be fair. All the men that were actually on the jury for the trail, based their vote and opinion off of racism. Because Tom was black there was no way they were ever going to vote for him. There was a similar situation in book 12 Angry Men, eleven of the twelve jurors had already decided the boy was guilty because of his race and background. Merriweather is criticizing Atticus but it doing this while sitting in his house, at his table and eating and drinking things that he bought and has. It does not bother Mrs. Merriweather at all. So Miss Maudie is pointing out that she was being rude and a hypocrite. (Lee, 312)
One reference to a mockingbird is in the beginning of the chapter when scout wanted to kill a roly-poly but Jem told her not to. This is a reference because you are not supposed to kill a mockingbird because they do not harm you and all they do is sing. The bug was not harming Scout and did nothing to provoke her. Additionally later in the chapter, the man who write the Maycomb newspaper, Mr. Underwood compared Tom's death to killing innocent songbirds, like a mockingbird. (Lee, 323)
