Mary Wollstonecraft had many impactful and important ideas in her writings about women and their place in the world; in society. She touched on many concepts throughout her writings, such as marriage, masculinity, knowledge, obedience, and many more. In this essay, I will be discussing one of her most important topics; the expectations of women in society. Women are an important part of society, but are rarely acknowledged as such, and haven’t for centuries. Men have held women as property throughout the entirety of history; making them essentially exist only to look pretty and do chores for them. Education systems, and society as a whole, don’t seem to enjoy focusing on the minorities and the oppressed, so these amazing writers and philosophers such as Wollstonecraft often go unrecognized, unlike the intellectual, white men such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Wollstonecraft’s ideas are strong, and very rarely outspoken during her time. She received so many repercussions for spreading her ideas and writings, even resulting in her husband divorcing her. She was strong and is such a strong and amazing influence to women, especially during her time. Her views are clearly still supported today in our modern-day feminism, although credit and recognition for her is often swept under the rug.
