The main character Marguerite in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sing by Maya Angelou was torn between many different influences, ambitions, obligations, and desires. Marguerite was born during the depression time. She had to work for what she wanted and needed to stay living. The first conflict deals with God, prejudice, and segregation. Another conflict is involves living with her momma or daddy. That is a major decision she had to make; it would affect her entire life. After analyzing Marguerite she changed and grew up majorly throughout the book. First, Maya (Marguerite) was very religious and believed in God very strongly. She was told that he was always there, always had someone to talk to, and would never be lonely. She had the acknowledgement that God was always with her.“God is love. Nothing has to be equal since it is not fair for everyone. Representing“A light shade had been pulled down between the Black community and all things white, but one could see through it enough to develop a fear-admiration-contempt for the white “things”--whitefolks’ care and white glistening houses and their children and their women” (48). The twenty-ninth chapter of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is used to describe Clidell and all his friends to the reader. Angelou describes how Clidell’s friends told her about all the cons and tricks they have used on wealthy white men in their lives. I think of a lot of these tricks as cruel and wrong, but I assume that these men thought they were justified. I think that Angelou provides a good reason for these cons when she says, “The needs of a society determine its ethics, and in the Black American ghettos the hero is that man who is offered only the crumbs from his country’s table but by ingenuity and courage is able to take for himself a Lucullan feast.” (Ch. 29, pg. 224).…

For slave’s, this dehumanization came in the form of having their name, culture and personal identity stripped away from them and for the slave master, the inability to function when deprived of slave assistance. In this essay, I will use Frederick Douglass’s narrative; along with, first-hand accounts to demonstrate how both the slave and the slave master became dehumanized through the institution of slavery. Literacy is the defining term that differentiated slaves from their masters. Slaves were kept from any connection or exposure to literacy, more or less reading and writing. In addition, by keeping them in constant mental neglect, the masters ensued their predominate power and wealth across the south in a time of prejudice and racial ideologies. As a result of becoming self-aware and knowledgeable of slavery’s demeanor and its injustices, Douglass contradicts the status quo in the South. This knowledge consists of the evident cruelties in slavery and how the masters hid themselves behind the justifications of their actions through religion and law.…

First, I think it is important to examine the historical context surrounding this novel. The book takes place in 1902, a little more than 80 years after the abolishment of slavery, but when sharecropping, which was arguably a new form of slavery, was very prevalent. African Americans still did not have basic rights that they were entitled to, and many were destitute and at the mercy of the same government who mistreated them and their ancestors.…

In Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird”, we straightway as the readers can tell from the title “Caged Bird” that the poem involves boundaries forced upon the bird inside due to the cage it’s in. Throughout the poem the bird in the cage is compared to a bird with freedom, this in depth symbolizes the struggles African Americans had during the era of white superiority. The free bird represents a person who is living a fortunate life and is free to do as he or she wishes, while on the other the caged bird signifies someone who has limits and cannot do anything. Maya Angelou also comes from a background of racial prejudices and discrimination so this is what she tries to convey throughout the poem. There are many themes explored in this poem such as the misfortune and survival of the unfittest.…
