The reason Boniface is placed in the eighth circle is that many of his contemporaries thought he was guilty of simony, despite a lack of hard proof. One of the sins that Boniface committed was that he took “the beautiful Lady by deceit” (XIX.52). According to the endnotes, the “Lady” is how people in Dante’s time referred to the Church. Boniface was accused of causing the abdication of the previous pope, Pope Celestine V and ascending to the papacy through simony. Pope Celestine is mentioned in the inferno in the third canto, when Dante is describing Limbo.…

De Nogaret was successful in his mission and, with fairly little resistance from other officials of the Catholic Church, was able to arrest and detain the pope. Boniface’s fate is fairly fitting considering his treatment of Celestine at the beginning of his career as pope, and this pope would meet the same end as his predecessor. Martyrdom is a term that refers to the voluntary death of a person often for religious purposes or as the result of persecution. Martyrs often sacrificed their own lives for a particular cause rather than, in the case of Christians, betray their beliefs. In the Christian tradition, after their deaths many martyrs became saints. Saints are religious people who are recognized as being exceptionally holy by the Church. Yet saints and martyrs served other purposes other than just to honour the holy work that the particular individual had done in their lifetime.…
