Who Is Langston Hughes

One of my American poets I chose is Langston Hughes. He was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. Mr. Hughes is a very educated African American man that came from a background of intelligence and educators. In fact, his uncle, John Mercer Langston, was the first African American to be elected to public office. Langston Hughes is a living example of the saying, “You can do what you want”. He moved and was raised by his grandmother after the separation of his parents and she put a since of activism and racial pride in him growing up and he began to have an actual interest in those things. But she was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4, 1928. She had one big brother who gave her the name “Maya”. After just four years of living in Arkansas, which she said had been a very racist place, her and her brother moves back with their mother. Maya is raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Freeman, which will go on trial where Maya testifies against him. Days after, Freeman is found beaten to death by whom which they think was Angelou’s uncle that was seeking revenge but it was never brought to attention. Angelou feels very bad about him being killed and stops speaking in for 5 years and which her book “I Know Why The Caged Birds Sings” is going to be from that perspective. She was also a high school student talking 2 college classes that were paid on scholarships. But she drops out when she is 14 to become San Francisco’s first female African American cable conductor and she has a son when she is 16. 8 years later, she begins her journey as a night club performer performing in places like New York and Chicago. 4 years later, she becomes a teacher in Italy and Israel. 2 years later, she dropped her only album ever, “Miss Calypso”. 3 years later, she writes, produces, direct, and perform and
