Laertes is a very important character in the play Hamlet. Laertes is a foil to Hamlet in the play. Laertes’ beliefs remain consistent throughout the play. Like Hamlet, Laertes’ father is murdered. They both seek out the killer of their fathers, which causes them to act the way they do. In the play Hamlet, Laertes is a static character who is focused on getting revenge for his father’s murder by killing Hamlet, which causes the death of both characters.
Laertes is considered a static character in the play. Laertes is considered this due to his “ balanced personality, and even give-and-take in relations with other people, honesty in following a particular rule in which he believes, not out of self-serving opportunism and conformity but out of genuine faith in general order and justice (Sadowski 101).” Laertes’ character is an exact example of what a static character is. An example of Laertes static personality is Laertes determination to celebrate ceremonies, rituals, and formalities correctly, and his anger when they are not performed in the right way. His anger is shown when he is mad at how his sister and father are not given proper rites and ceremonies at their burials.
