After graduation from University of Munich, he went to Vienna to studied Conducting and Music Theory with Gustav Mahler, who was a music director of the Vienna Royal Opera Theatre whereby he worked as a rehearsal pianist and assistant conductor of Mahler. When he was 24 years old in 1906, he took a post as principle conductor of Geneva Grand Theatre under Mahler’s recommendation. His career as conductor had persuaded him to many major cities of Europe in the following years. In 1918, the year when the Word War I ended, he moved to Berlin and was active in conducting and composing at the Grand Theatre with the directorship of Max Reinhardt. Moreover, he was the leader of “Golden 1920’s”, which was involved in various activities such as frequent guest performances with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, lectures at the University of Berlin, writing reviews for the newspaper and etc. In 1931, he came to Japan at the age of 48, because of disappointment from the position as the Director in General at Berlin Municipal Theatre.
