First, Claudius as a king is a phenomenal leader who allows his country to thrive and bathe in success. As well as leading the country to success, he also shows tremendous respect to his subjects and people that come to meet him. “Welcome, dear Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Moreover that we did much long to see you (2.2.1-2).” In this quote one can visualize …show more content…
This proves that Claudius is focused on keeping his kingdom intact, which definitely makes him a good king.
Although Claudius may be a good king, in person he is a greedy, evil, scumbag. First of all, he kills his own brother, King Hamlet, just for the sake of gaining power. This definitely shows his desire for power and that he puts this desire over the well-being of his own family. Another example of how Claudius is a bad person is that he deliberately sends Hamlet off to England just for the sake of having him killed. Hamlet is on to Claudius and knows that he murdered his father, and Claudius cares so much about his own image, that he sends Hamlet away. Claudius says, “I your commission will forthwith dispatch, And he to England shall along with you (3.3.3-4).” In this quote, Claudius is explaining to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, that Hamlet is to go with them on their journey to England. It is unknown to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but Claudius’ intentions are to have Hamlet killed in England so he can be rid of him forever. This plan from Claudius alone, clearly shows that he is a bad person. Claudius also is extremely selfish, never caring about others. He always puts his lust for power and money over anyone or anything. This can be seen through the fact that the only real reason he married Gertrude was to acquire power. He clearly does not love her as a wife, he just is with her for the power.
