Illustrator Report – Kerby Rosanes
Tessa Richards

For Manila based artist, Kerby Rosanes, illustration was a hobby turned part-tine freelance, turned full time career. He started out drawing and doodling to fill time at work and began posting his art online. He soon grew a large following of sites like Tumblr and DeviantART before he was commissioned to turn his illustrations into a colouring book for adults, called Doodle Invasion, in 2013. By 2014, Rosanes realised he could make a career out of his ‘doodle art’ so he quit his job as a graphic designer to pursue illustration full time. Since then he has had four more books published, including New York Times bestseller Animorphia and a collection of his sketchbook art called Sketchy Stories.

The description of this piece on his blog says that Rosanes was commissioned by a Japanese client to create a piece celebrating Miyazaki’ most notable characters. The work combines his usual cartoonish style with Miyazaki’s iconic characters from films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. The original piece was created entirely with Uni Pin Fine Liners on paper and took over 12 hours to complete. He uploaded images of his progress to his Tumblr blog (kerbyrosanes.com/post/59964792042) showing his drawing process. It shows how he first sketched a detailed plan of everything he wanted to draw in pencil before he then went over the pencil and added shadows with a 0.3mm fine liner before using a 0.05mm fine liner to add detail. Only hours after the project went viral, it was announced that Hayao Miyazaki was retiring. Rosanes says that if he had known about Miyazaki’s retirement and if it was not a commissioned piece he would have “loved to include all [Miyazaki’s] characters… as a way of appreciating his contributions to the world and to me as one of my creative inspirations.” Rosanes is a huge fan of Miyazaki’s and grew up watching Studio Ghibli films so this is another of his favourite

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

Half Caste child (1957) This artwork depicts a young white girl in clinging to an older black man while a black woman is crying in the background. This painting has a historical theme because it shows a child of mixed decent during a time when this was a bad thing. The lack of care she seems to get from the older man helps show this. This painting was painted after the Australian assimilation project when aboriginal people of mixed decent were to be assimilated into white society wether they wanted to or not.…

Inadvertently I stumbled upon something that I would take for granted as a refuge. A refuge in which I could express myself, my emotions and transfer them into a visual reality. For once I did not acknowledge the presence of the crutches beside me. Hesitant at first then gradually getting more bold with each sweep of the hand, my depressed state faded away as color expanded across the canvas and replaced itself with one of hunger and awe. This was the day art pulled me by the arm me and forced me to expand its importance in my life.…

Children’s literature is a necessity to facilitate learning, assist in shaping reader’s minds, to stimulate their thought processes and is a reflection of social change. Historically, Australian picturebooks were not a readily available or utilised resource. Australian colonial children were also only exposed to British children’s books, which sheltered them from experiencing literature about their own history, nature and landscape.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
