The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, tells the story of two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, in Oklahoma during the 1960s. Johnny is the protagonist’s best friend and a Greaser, too. He is really quiet and easily scared, so people in the gang treat him like he is weak and soft. But when Ponyboy, the protagonist, gets into trouble and needs help, Johnny proves that he is courageous and strong. He risks his own life to save Ponyboy. He proves he is much more than this stereotype by sacrificing himself to save his friend, Ponyboy. This is why people should never judge someone based only on appearance. In the quote, “He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes, and the beating he got from the Socs didn’t help matters. He was the gang’s pet, everyone’s kid brother. His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him,” (12). The quote says how Johnny had been kicked around too much. He was the gang’s pet because he was seen as weak. “I remembered Johnny. His face was all cut up and bruised, and I remembered how he had cried when we found him, half-conscious, in the comer lot. Johnny had it awful rough at home--- it took a lot to make him cry.” (5). This quote explains a memory of when Johnny jumped and was in horrible condition. He already had to deal with an abusive home so you can’t get him to cry easily, but surprisingly he was. This is why he is the scared boy he is. Then, things took a drastic turn. Johnny and Ponyboy find themselves in trouble with a drunk and aggressive guy named Bob. Bob had seen them with his girlfriend, Cherry, earlier and thought they were trying to steal her from him. Johnny had to deal with him brutally jumping, so he kept a small blade in his pocket for protection. Bob starts doing the unthinkable and starts drowning
