Who Is Jerry Maguire?

Improved Essays
Have you ever seen the movie, “Jerry Maguire”? It is a movie about the experiences of a sports agent and the adventure he goes through after losing all of his clients. After watching this movie, I was convinced that this was the career path for me. In choosing any career, one must ask the question, “Is the effort that you are putting into your goals going to pay off the way you want it to in the long run?” For example, when considering being a sports agent, success depends on taking initiative to do more than the minimum. For instance, you can go to law school and specialize in sports law, making you more knowledgeable, potentially more desirable and earn a higher salary, or you could skip law school and still become an agent yet not be certain …show more content…
The first agencies can be traced back to a single athlete, Harold “Red” Grange, and a single agent, Charles “C.C” Pyle. According to US Legal, sports agencies started in 1925 after Red Grange hired an agent to negotiate to contract between him and the football team trying to sign him . Red Grange was the first athlete to have a person representing him. After this, in the 1960s, Mark McCormack became the representative for Arnold Palmer. McCormack changed the way that deals were made between the players and their sponsors. From that point on, the amount of player-representative relationships grew dramatically (US Law). As for the big agents, a couple big time agents are current Lakers GM and former super agent, Rob Pelinka, as well as former super agent and MLB team owner, Jeff Moorad. Both these men did a lot for the profession although Jeff Moorad did something special. Jeff Moorad revolutionized the sports agent business by creating a more personal relationship between player and agent. This was a gateway for how the relationships between players and agent is today. It was no longer the boring employee and employer relationship. The relationship he created between the agents and the players became a lot more personal where the agent would be the player’s guy for anything he needed. The movie, Jerry Maguire, is based on the true story of Jeff Moorad and his partner Leigh Steinberg and these changes that they pioneered. The story of these two men's successes were not only told in this movie but also was the story line for an Academy Award winning movie. Overall, aside from the huge change brought forth by Moorad and Steinberg, the business has not changed much over that last couple

And the few that are capable of playing professionally understand the importance of a degree if they do not become a professional athlete. After all, only 2% of college athletes go pro (Chait). So if you are a part of the 98% of college athletes that do not play professionally, then you must establish a plan for what to do after graduation. This plan will likely require passing grades and a college degree. If athletes are given money to play, then they will worry more about their salaries than their education.…

Choosing a career is not always based on what someone is greatly passionate about. It can be about the pay rate, the hours or even the environment. Mariano is a professor of philosophy, a student advisor and a community volunteer. In his article, Levine explains in four main sections what he calls “The four I’s [of his essential cognitive backpack…] Interpretation, Instrumentation, Interaction, and Inner Direction.”(17). In Levine’s first section of the article “Interpretation”, Levine begins his argument with an anecdote about a student who is struggling in college because in high school she depended on her good memorization skills rather than understanding concepts as a whole.…

So, what about those who will eventually have to leave their playing days behind and get a job in the real world? Kevin M. Kniffin and Brian Wansink, two individuals involved in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, teamed up with Mitsuru Shimizu, an assistant professor of psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, to do a study that will answer that question. They orchestrated questionnaires to test how youth sports leads to future success in the world. They tested the leadership skills, self-confidence, and prosocial behaviors of both former athletes, and of individuals who were part of the yearbook staff or in their high school’s band. Two separate studies were done, and the first one showed that people actually expect former athletes to contain more leadership skills and character traits, and are consequently more likely to hire them into higher-status careers.…

One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity. Being of Puerto Rican descent in the inner city kept the lack of financial stability of my youth in view and motivated me to pursue my education. As a black American female I learned the value of diversity, having experienced first-hand the misconceptions that can shape in a homogeneous environment. For instance from being called “too much of a free-spirited city girl,” in the country to later being “too old-fashioned…

if there is one thing college has taught me, it is that it does not matter what you think you are going to become, or how far back you start from, but it is that determination in the place of those disadvantages is what makes all the difference. I did not choose to be a lawyer because anyone in my family was, in fact, no one in my family worked anything close to it. My mother has worked as a waitress, a seamstress in a factory, and finally as a baker since arriving in this country. I took it upon myself to try and become something more, something that my mother did not have the opportunity to be. As the oldest child in a house of three I fulfilled the function of the interpreter in the family, which gave me the sense of responsibility and maturity that came with that role.…
