The first mockingbird is Jem, he is the son of Atticus, a lawyer who is appointed to represent an African American man in a court case. Throughout the story Jem is exposed to the malicious words and comments of his neighbors. On page 106 Jem destroys Mrs.Dubose’s camellia bushes in a blind rage caused by the comments she made about his father. Scout explains that after he was done “He beat my baton against his knee, snapped it in two and threw it on the ground”. Earlier in the story he buys Scout the baton with his own birthday money, he understood how much it meant to her. He took out his aggression on something he knew someone her cared for cherished. It's made clear earlier in the story that the Fintch’s are a Christian family, Jem’s actions
