Jean Valjean is a Cathlic who is a plays in the movie Les Miserables. He was born into a very poor family in France. He tried hard to keep his family alive for many years.
One time he tried to steal a piece of bread to feed his sister’s children and got caught in the action. For this he was sentenced to five years in prison. After four unsuccessful escape attempts, he was added twelve years in prison to his time. Later he was added two more years for fighting the guards during his second escape attempt. Altogether he would have to be in the prison for nineteen years.
Valjean was sent to a very harsh prison. It was run by a Police Inspector who’s name was Javert. Valjean and Javert did not get along. Javert was the kind of person who did not belive in forgiveness, he believed that each man should be punished for each and every one of his sins.
After serving nineteen years in prison, Valjean was finally set free. Before he was released Javert gave him a piece of paper. That paper meant that Valjean was not allowed to get a job because he was now considered a criminal.

After this he encountered a bishop who changed his life around by showing him mercy. An example of him showing Jean Valjean mercy was when the bishop asked him to spend the night at his house. In the middle of the night Jean Valjean stole some golden cups and ran away. He was caught by soldiers and was brought back to the bishop. The soldiers said they found Jean Valjean with the stolen golden cups. Instead of agreeing with the soldiers the bishop said, ‘’Yes I did give those to him, he also forgot to take the rest of the cups.’’ This act of kindness from the bishop really surprised and encouraged Valjean to become a changed
