In Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, the redemption of Javert mirrors the redemption I showed towards Katie Houser when she stole all my money. Javert ruined Jean Valjean’s life whenever things started to go well. Javert sent Jean to prison which forced him to leave behind his good reputation and large income. He tracked Jean down and forced him to move away to conceal his identity. Javert was captured by Marius’ barricade and was sentenced to die. Jean agreed to be the one to kill him. Jean led him away from the soldiers to supposedly kill him. Instead, Jean untied him and let him go. Jean even turned himself in and gave Javert the opportunity to arrest him. Javert had intervened and caused extreme conflict in Jean’s life yet he spared him.

Katie was my close neighbor at the time and decided to take advantage of her access to my empty house. She had a friend over and convinced her to go accompany her to break into my house and steal my money. They left with a solid $80. As a seventh grader, $80 is quite a lot of money and I was quite despaired as I thought that I had simply misplaced my hard earned money. After finding out that Katie had stolen my money, I was rather angry. What kind of psycho steals all of her best friend’s money. I was inclined to go to her house and take all her money and rob her of all her treasured belongings. Instead I decided to use a little self control. I forgave the debt rather than demanding that she pay me back. A few weeks later, I was at her house and spotted some money sitting on her dresser. I considered taking it. It would have been justice and revenge. Instead I left the money where it was and continued being the good person that I am. Jean Valjean showed Javert redemption after Javert wronged him.
