“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race” by Kofi Annan fits perfectly into Brown Girl Dreaming. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is a book about an African American girl, Jackie, who writes her life experiences like trying to find her identity, which takes place in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. She encounters countless problems and many of them are because of being an African American so, she writes short poems about how she feels being treated differently than others and many other interesting topics. Jacqueline reveals that she found her voice, which was writing and almost felt like she could not express her happiness into words. Jacqueline and I share numerous …show more content…
Even though, my dreams have changed I’ve always wanted to be dancer ever since I was little. Jackie is passionate about writing and it means the world to her, and when she grows up her dream is to be a writer. Unfortunately, Jackie’s family members didn’t support it because they thought she won’t be capable of earning as much money as she would if she were to become a teacher, lawyer, or a hair stylist. I share a similar connection because when I told my parents I wanted to be a dancer they reacted that same way as Jackie’s family. They thought I wouldn’t be able to make a living from that and encouraged me to think it would be a great pastime, just as Jackie’s family confesses to her that they would prefer if she becomes something other than a writer, my family laughed when I mentioned about wanting to become a dancer when I grow up. Jackie writes, “they say, but maybe you should be a teacher, a lawyer, do hair…” (229). This is …show more content…
Jacqueline’s grandfather smoked a lot of tobacco and had severe coughing problems. In the Jacqueline explains, “We see the dim orange of my grandfather’s cigarette… and the coughing that follows him” (100). Back when my grandfather was younger, he used to smoke a ridiculous number of cigarettes, which has resulted in terrible health conditions. Just like how Jacqueline’s grandfather coughs continuously, my grandfather can’t go very long without not coughing. This is important because back then people weren’t as aware of all the detrimental side effects of smoking. If they were more informed on it, they wouldn’t do it as much and would consider it before putting their lives in risk. Now, things have changed and people are strictly taught at young ages that smoking is extreme. My grandfather always tells me to never even imagine smoking a cigarette because I’ll get addicted like he did and have severe health problems. My grandfather really regrets smoking because he has to take lots of pills everyday. This has affected the relationship with my grandfather because I’ll always listen to my elder’s advice. I know he’s right so I’m going to listen to whatever he has to offer me since he has experienced this. This tells me that my grandfather cares about me and doesn’t want anyone in my family going through what he had to. Just like how Jacqueline hopes her grandfather stays

I was on flagline throughout all my four years in high school. In fact, I was a natural at twirling and I was the only freshman who made the line my first year! These feelings of self-worth and confidence assisted me as I navigated my way through the identity versus role confusion stage. Erikson (as cited in Swartwood, p. 84) states that the developmental crisis of this stage is centered on the establishment of identity. Role confusion can be experience by an adolescent who does not successfully establish an identity in occupation, gender roles, politics, and religion. Erikson’s work has been expanded on by James Marcia (as cited in Swartwood, p. 84), who has recognized four “identity statuses.” These statuses “explain unique differences in how young adults search for an answer to…” who they are, based on their levels of exploration and commitment (Swartwood, p. 84).…
