6. Pick a character you believe was heroic in the novel and defend your choice. While many of the characters could have been considered heroic, the character that I was mostly intrigued by was actually Nels Gudmundsson, Kabuo Miyamoto's lawyer. I believe it takes a lot of effort and courage to go up against well respected people from your home town and defend and "outsider" like Kabuo. Although Nels had grown old, late seventies and was blind in one eye, he was good at what he did. (Guterson 20) Challenging the coroner and sherriff of the town could have been intimidating for anyone defending someone from their own town let alone for an islander.
