Harry S Truman vas a visionary leader and on July 26 1948 he put into effect an executive order that would pave a way for future generations. His actions would also change a mindset for a young kid from Missouri just like Truman.
Truman labeled racism as a disease and he recognized the horrid situation our country and military was in, but still visualized a better future. Our Student Guide describes this trait as dispositional flexibility. Our guide also states that our World view is shaped by our experiences, culture, family, education, beliefs and values. Truman as he is the only President from my home state. During my Junior year in HS my government teacher focused on civil rights and I remembered thinking to myself that if a man from Missouri born in 1884 could keep an open mind then I could too. When I was tech school in 2001 I spoke to the first African American man I ever met. He was a class mate and on the first day I walked up to him and said “Hi my name is Dustin and I’ve never spoke to a black man before…in which he replied is this real life? Are you from Mayberry?….In the last 16 years just like Harry S. Truman I have witnessed the value, dedication, & professionalism diversity brings to our military through my leaders, peers, and subordinates. Just as Truman used realism and optimism when delivering messages about change, I too have tried to implement this same style when communicating change to those under my charge.     The first incident that causes Truman to have disbelief is when he sees his father on the streets.
