Who Is Hamlet's Guilty?

Decent Essays
Hamlet is an interesting character. He is unforgettable because he is the main character of Hamlet and he is relatively fickle. When anybody tells him anything, he believes it, and who knows who the ghost really is. When he tests his theory, he tries to watch the king to see if he is really guilty. The king calls off the play confirming his guilt by being upset afterward, unfortunately we cannot confirm what he is guilty of. Shakespeare uses him as a hero and divining rod to find everything wrong. He uses Hamlet like a detective with an anonymous tip. When he gets suspicious, he must know the truth. When he acts suspicious, he has no clue, which is the flaw in his plan. In The Lion King, Simba’s father is killed by Scar who would be a representation

On the other hand, some people might say that Hamlet takes long to avenge his father’s death because as George Detmold states, “ Perhaps the most significant reason why Hamlet hesitates , the critic concludes, is that although he is tempted by love, kingship, and even revenge, he is long past the point where he desires to do anything about them. None of these objects gives him a new incentive for living” (219). Detmold questions how come it took Hamlet approximately three months to take action, and then succeed in the very last minute whether it was unintentional or after he processed the thoughts through (219)? Well, the answer to this is just because he wasn’t curious in doing so and his mindset was someplace else, thinking about the consequences…

When Hamlet continually asks his friends to play the flute, it is not because he wants to mock them or because he wants to tell them that they’re liars, but it is more an expression of how easily the concept of dishonesty comes into peoples lives. In saying that playing the flute is “as easy as lying” (Ham. 3. 2. 87), the reader sees best the ease with which this dishonesty comes. Also aiding in the expression of this concept of betrayal is the incident when Hamlet likens Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to a sponge. In this moment he expresses how they have soaked up the king’s commands and unflinchingly served their own purposes by doing such. What is most striking about this…

Of all the feelings a person can feel, there’s but one feeling that can leave us in a state of shock, help us escape reality, commit deeds that we can’t endure, and corrupt our rationality of thinking. This is more commonly known as the emotion “guilt”, which is a feeling one feels after realizing they have done something unspeakable. The theme of guilt is clearly evident in Robertson Davies’ Fifth Business and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Guilt is particularly used in both narratives to portray the true nature of characters in both narratives, by developing emotional tension in characters, contrasting the type of guilt felt by between characters and is also used to influence their decisions. A tragic hero will evoke both our pity and our terror but never is completely good nor is the hero ever completely evil. To justify the tragic effect, the hero will appear better than we are, in the sense that he is of higher moral worth. The hero will have to suffer a decline from a state of being happy to one of being sad, brought about by his tragic flaw. Making the King confess took a lot of strategic planning and also with logical thinking. According to the portrayal of the ghost, Hamlet was faced with a supernatural conundrum, in which he had to decide whether the ghost was evil or sending a message from the dead.…

In William Shakespeare's work Hamlet, Shakespeare uses the ghost of the deceased king to play a significant role in the plot of the story as a whole in multiple ways. The first way Shakespeare uses the ghost of King Hamlet is by first using him to play a crucial role in the development of the characters in the play, especially Hamlet. An example of the ghost doing this is sending Hamlet into his descent into madness and furthering his complex character. Shakespeare does this by having the ghost inform Hamlet of his father’s murder. Secondly, Shakespeare uses the ghost to influence the theme of revenge and madness that develops in the play by using the ghost as a driving force for Hamlet.…
