In The crucible by Arthur Miller is a play about witchcraft in Salem Massachusetts taking place in 1692. While in this time there were many girls or women that were accused of witchcraft, Elizabeth Proctor being one. Elizabeth Proctor is a married woman to John Proctor, in her late thirties, who is loyal, stubborn and strong mind. Her character may be little but her role has more to what meets the eye.
While Elizabeth may be a small role there are small key ideas to show she is loyal. She is loyal because of her marriage with John. And this girl…” (87). She is saying that even though after everything after them losing their last baby and her getting sick; she knew her husband was turning away from him. In spite of this she went onto saying on how he was a good man and that he would never lie, steal or be drunk. She is loyal because she would even go as far as to be with him even though he committed adultery with a minor. Which is also ironic because when Hale confronted John to recite the Ten Commandments; he forgot the last one which happened to be adultery. Elizabeth is also a very stubborn when Cheever has shown up to their house to bring her to jail for being accused of witchcraft. Even though she has given up trying to argue with them that she was innocent when Mr. Cheever asked her if she had any poppets. Elizabeth spoke, “I never kept no poppets, not since I were a girl… Oh! Why this is Mary’s… Has the court discovered a text in poppets now?” (63-63). These short but impacting quotes show hints of how elizabeth is trying to be nice while standing her ground. Mr. Cheever had come for her to see if she had any poppets
