He served twice as head of mathematics before it combined with physics in 1957. That’s around the time the Civil Right Act Movement was occurring. He witnessed the come up of blacks and white coming together. Also he witnessed them fighting for peace. This is also the time that the Vietnam War took place. He saw blacks being sent off to a war that country didn’t treat them fair. Elbert tried his best to stay positive amongst others. Im sure in his spare time he went out with his family and went on vacations. However he was a Professor so that can be hard on the family. He stayed late nights at the college studying and developing theorems and ideas. He tried to develop the mathematics PhD program at Howard. Then he retired and wanted to study more about mathematics but died of a short illness. After his death the PhD Program was approved and was able to recruit a love of individuals to study mathematics and receive Masters and higher degrees. Howard University set up the Elbert F Cox Scholarship Fund in 1975. This laid a foundation for many young black and white, or any other race to study mathematics.
