Who Is Chris Mccandless Selfish

Chris McCandless was a young man who was adventurous and wanted to enjoy his life to the fullest and explore his independence. He changed several things about himself, including changing his name, burning up all his money and leaving his family behind to embark on his adventure. According to Krakauer, "Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideas: others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of ignorance and stupidity and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received" (krakauer 193). This analysis of McCandless and his journey is solid as he showed bravery by taking the journey into the wilderness to experience nature and another form of life. "Entering the wilderness ill-prepared and surviving a near-death experience does not make you a better human, it makes you damn lucky" (Krakauer 51). He would have taken the experiences of the people who have been to the wilderness instead of trying to do something that someone else had already tried. He was staying on a bus, meaning someone else was there before him, meaning he could have searched the bus for any indication of maps or any other tools for survival from the past. His bravery at this point is hampered by his inability to understand that life is not the same everywhere and that people need to protect themselves. While some of the audience might have a black and white look at how McCandless' journey portrays his character, some might argue that both characters were necessary if he was going to meet his goal of adventure and learning something new.
