She also went to San Antonio, Texas and completed a residency at Art Pace. (Artnet) Aoshima didn’t become internationally known until 2001, when her work was displayed in the Superflat exhibition. (Seattle Art Museum) Her popularity grew in 2005 when her works City Glow (Figure 1) and Paradise (Figure 2) covered the Union Square subway station in New York as part of the Little Boy exhibition. (Seattle Art Museum) Aoshima has also had a few solo shows. Currently she lives and works in Tokyo and is a current member of the Kaikai Artist Collective. The Kaikai Artist Collective is headed by Takashi Murakami, who is a well-known Japanese contemporary artist. Aoshima’s works often portray young women in dreamscapes or surreal scenes. They normally include figures such as; demons, ghosts, skeletons, and nature. Her works are created originally in Adobe Illustrator. In Adobe she uses hundreds of lines, curves, and all sorts of shapes that she manipulates to suit the image she wants to create. She often uses the same data for repeated background elements and spends extra time making modifications to preserve organic lines in her depictions of nature.
