Carlos Cruz Diez, born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1923, is considered to be one of Venezuela’s modernist master. He lived in Paris since 1960 studying and understanding concepts of Kinetic and Optical art. Holland Cotter, a writer for the Ney York Times explains, "he turned his attention to new strains of geometric abstraction, including Op art, and to kinetic art." All of his works and his research established him as one of the 20th-century thinkers in the means of color. Jessica Leigh Lebos, a writer for Connect Savannah, illustrates, “[Cruz-Diez is] considered one of the most influential color theorist in modern times,” she goes on to say, “[he] spent more than 50 years delving into subjective nature of color itself—and how its perception is far from static.” SCADMoA explains, “[his] research has contributed to a new way of understanding color phenomena in art, greatly expanding its perceptual universe.” Lebos also explains, “Cruz-Diez is best known for combining moving patterns and tones that change with perspective of the viewer.” All of his works, the audience is able to interact with his paintings and sculptures and it gives a better understanding to color. Cruz-Diez claims, “color is just a circumstance created instantaneously before our eyes” (Lebos).
