Boo Radley has arguably the most important role in To Kill a Mockingbird, by “Harper Lee.” He plays more of a hidden role throughout most of the story, but in the end, he emerges as a hero in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. The story begins in the 1930s, Atticus has two children, Jem and Scout. Maycomb is a friendly town, but across the street from the Finch’s lies the Radleys. The children and their little friend Dill, who comes to Maycomb during the summer months, are fascinated with one of the Radleys, specifically Arthur or as the children know him as Boo Radley. He is considered a scary monster by the children at the beginning of the story. As the story continues, the kids realize Arthur is a misunderstood man. Boo becomes a hero in Alabama’s Maycomb County. To begin, Arthur Radley’s character is developed from a hated monster to a misunderstood hero. At the beginning of the story, Jem told the horror story of Boo Radley. He frightened the little minds and they all became frightened of Boo. But throughout the story, Boo began giving small thoughtful gifts to the children. When Jem tried to sneak into the Radley house and his pants got stuck on the fence, Arthur fixed Jem’s pants, folded them neatly, and laid them on the fence for Jem to return and retrieve his pants. The children began to realize that the horror story of Arthur was not true, and that he was a good man. Later in the story, Bob Ewell is seeking revenge at Atticus for embarrassing his family in court. One night while Jem and Scout were making their trip back home from the school play, Bob sneaked up behind the children and attacked them. Boo came to their rescue, fought off Bob, and carried Jem back to the Finch’s house while Scout followed. Arthur saved the kids and became a hero. Boo went from the town monster to the town
