Who Is Beowulf An Epic Hero

Beowulf dominates literature’s list of epic heroes. A courageous young warrior at the beginning of his story, Beowulf defeats monsters and protects the people of the land. Later, as an older king, Beowulf battles a fearsome dragon. He does not lose his courage even when most of his men abandon him. Instead, he wins the fight and dies honorably, immortalized as a protector of his people. Quests like Beowulf’s are rare in modern entertainment. But while they may not fight dragons or protect kingdoms, the qualities shown by Beowulf extend to even television and movie characters. These characters are epic heroes. Selflessness and perseverance are two qualities of “modern” heroes that echo their ancestor Beowulf.
