Who Is Ba Jin?

Ba Jin, originally known as Li Yaotang , was born on November 25, 1904 in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China. Throughout his life, he wrote novels and short stories which were mostly popular in the 30s and 40s. Ba Jin was also known as Pa Chin, thus giving him three different things to go by. He lived an extraordinary 100 years. This making, a lot happen during his time here on Earth. Ba Jin had a Confucian education growing up. This just goes to show that he came from a wealthy family. Ba Jin took an interest in writing during his education years, where he learned foreign languages. In his later years he studied in France but then moved to Shanghi. In Shanghi, he wrote his first novel, “Miewang”, or in English, “Extinction”. This novel was a success in 1929. He signed his work with the name Ba Jin, hence why he is known as that mostly. His most famous novel was “Jia” (in English, “Family”). “Jia” was the first book out of a trilogy. The other books in the trilogy consisted of “Chun” (Spring), and “Qiu” (Autumn). The trilogy as a whole was named “Jiliu”. The trilogy was completed in 1940. Ba Jin was an anarchist which is why he wrote about these topics. An anarchist believes in the government system called anarchy which is basically not having a government at all. He eventually became more negative with his writing. During this phase, Ba Jin had some important novels to show for it. These included: “Qiyuan” (“Pleasure Qarden”), and “Hanye” (“Cold Nights”). These were published in 1944 and 1947.
