9 October 2015 With parenting comes love, attention, and commitment. Though some may disagree, these are all traits that Atticus Finch shares with his children Jean Louise also known as Scout and Jem, in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. To kill a mockingbird takes place in the 1920's and tells the story of the Finch Family and their life in Maycomb, Alabama. Throughout the book, the consequences of racism, evil and ignorance are shown through the slaying of a mockingbird, a character named Tom Robinson. For example, Atticus reads with Scout every night which makes Scout ecstatic. When Jean Louise learns that school may interfere with this bonding time between her and her father, this leaves her furious and devastated- so Atticus brings up a compromise and tells her "If you'll concede the necessity of going to school, we'll go on reading every night just as we always have."(Lee,p.31) Scout agrees to this mutual agreement. Atticus shows compassion towards both children and the feeling is mutual. With Atticus aging, it becomes harder to play football and to be active like Jem wants, but the old man still finds ways to bond with his son. Jem very much looks up to Atticus as a lawyer after Tom Robinson's case, seeing how Atticus treated Tom as a human being with morals instead of "a negro" like most other white men did. Scout thinks of Mayella Ewell as "the loneliest person in the world"(Lee, p.191). This due to the fact that the father of Mayella, Bob Ewell, does not know anything of human dignity or morals like Atticus and is not fit to be a parent of so many children. Bob has neglected to treat his own kids with respect or love, seen in Tom Robinson's trial when Atticus is questioning Mayella. Mayella views Atticus' tone as making fun of her so she eventually grows
