The character Arnold in the “The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, suffers from hardship as a Native American. In Arnold’s reservation, his school is poor and has a really low educational system, as is true for all Natives in America. According to the Huffington Post, only 51 percent of Native Americans graduated from high school in 2010. Moreover, Arnold in the book goes to a school that is so poor that in his class he is studying the same book that his parents were using when they were his age. They would be poor, they probably wouldn’t have any job, they would be drunk and would maybe die at a young age. They would never have a bright future, if they stayed on the reservation. Additionally, many people are poor on earth but one of the largest poor population are Indians, it’s like it’s part of their destiny to be poor. In the story, Arnold explain how he feels that being poor is part of his future, his destiny, he can’t change it. He feels like he is poor because he is Indian. One of the quote about poverty is “It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you’re poor because you’re stupid
